As of 30 June 2018, China's movie box office reached 32.03 billion yuan (US$4.7 bn), increased by roughly 18% compared with 27.19 billion yuan (US$3.99 bn) in H1 2018, according to the State Film Bureau.

Movie theatre attendance totaled 900 million, up by 15.3% compared with 780 million in H1 2017. Domestic movie box office was 18.95 billion yuan (US$2.78 bn), an 80% increase year-on-year, accounting for 59.2% of the total box office (which was 38.7% in H1 2017).

Domestic movie box office reached 20.2 billion yuan (US$2.97 bn) in Q1 2018, 6 billion yuan (US$87.95 mn) higher than that in Q1 2017. The hot box office declined by nearly 1 billion yuan (US$14.7 mn) year-on-year in Q2 (11.8 billion yuan or US$1.73 bn) 2018.

There are 41 movies each exceeding 100 million yuan (US$14.7 mn) box office, among which 19 were domestic movies and 22 were imported ones.

A hugely successful Chinese movie has brought China's pharmaceutical industry into the spotlight. What changes might happen?

Starting from June 30, the Chinese movie "Dying to Survive" became the social topic in China. The movie is based on a true story of how Chinese leukemia patients struggle to buy generic drugs from India because they couldn’t afford patented drugs.

Starring Xu Zheng, a famous Chinese director and actor, the movie got a rating of 8.9/10 on Chinese review website Douban – the fourth highest score for a domestically made movie. By July 13, the 116-minute movie has collected nearly 2 billion yuan (US$300 million) box office revenue within eight days.

It has dominated the social conversation not only because of its roller-coaster emotional ride from comedy in the first half to the tragedy in the second half but also because the affordability issue of Chinese patients and their families – it has never been so clearly presented to the public before the movie...

China’s movie box office revenue hit 55.911 billion yuan in 2017, soaring to a greater height. The number of movie screens reached 50.8 thousand, more than that in North America for the first time.

For Chinese moviegoers, female accounts for 55% and male 45%. The young under 30-year-old accounts for 49%; users with Bachelor's degree or above accounts for 75%; users with an annual net income of more than 100,000 accounts for 41%; and, those having children account for 41% according to Pintu Media.

China’s movie market saw robust growth in the number of released movies, movie theaters, and movie screens in the recent 5 years. In 2013, it only saw 29 million movie show times in China while in 2017, this number grew to a height of 75 million. In 2017, the number of movie theaters reached 8,576, nearly doubled that of 2013.

With the increase in numbers and improvement in quality, the movie theater has provided the better experience of watching movies for consumers. ...

China’s box office market reached 44 billion yuan in 2015 with a growth rate of 48.7%; however, it just saw slight growth to 44.56 billion yuan (US$6.42 billion) in 2016.

In 2014, the online ticketing users of China movies market reached a high growth rate of 45.3% and drops to 31.2% in 2015; but, it will remain high growth rate of over 20% in 2016 according to the estimation of Analysys. The number of online ticketing users of China movies market will reach 249 million in 2018.
