China Outpaces US in Industrial Robot Density, Now Ranks Fifth Globally https://www.chinainternetwatch.com/42913/china-outpaces-us-robot-density/ Tue, 06 Jun 2023 00:08:03 +0000 https://www.chinainternetwatch.com/?p=42913 According to the International Federation of Robotics, China has outpaced the United States in terms of industrial robot density for the first time in 2022, a testament to its aggressive investment in the sector. With 322 operational robots per 10,000 workers, China now ranks fifth globally in the manufacturing industry’s automation.

The leap in robot density globally has been significant, more than doubling in the past six years. In Asia, this increase is marked by an impressive compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18% since 2016, largely due to significant installations of robots.

In 2021, South Korea held the top spot globally with a record 1,000 industrial robots per 10,000 workers, bolstered by its renowned electronics and automobile industries.

Singapore and Japan followed closely, with 670 and 399 robots per 10,000 workers, respectively.

Meanwhile, Germany remained Europe’s biggest robot market, and China distinguished itself as the world’s fastest-growing robot market. Despite a slight increase in robot density from 2020 to 2021, the US ranked ninth globally.

China installed 140,500 new industrial robots in 2019 https://www.chinainternetwatch.com/31286/industrial-robots-report/ Mon, 05 Oct 2020 12:00:45 +0000 https://www.chinainternetwatch.com/?p=31286 Asia remains the strongest market for industrial robots and China rose by 21% and reached about 783,000 units in 2019, according to World Robotics 2020 Industrial Robots report by International Federation of Robotics (IFR).

Sales of new robots remain on a high level with 373,000 units shipped globally in 2019. This is 12% less compared to 2018, but still, the 3rd highest sales volume ever recorded.

Japan ranks second with about 355,000 units, up 12%. India has a new record of about 26,300 units, an increase of 15%. Within five years, India has doubled the number of industrial robots operating in the country´s factories.

The share of newly installed robots in Asia was about two-thirds of global supply. Sales of almost 140,500 new robots in China is below the record years of 2018 and 2017 but still more than double the numbers sold five years ago (2014: 57,000 units).

IFR report also shows that the installations of top Asian markets slowed down – in China (down 9%) and Japan (down 10%).

In China, the broad majority of 71% of new robots was shipped in from foreign suppliers. Chinese manufacturers still mainly cater to the domestic market, where they gain increasing market shares.

Foreign suppliers deliver some 29% of their units to the automotive industry, while it is only around 12% for Chinese suppliers. Therefore, foreign suppliers are more affected by the decline of business in the Chinese automotive industry than domestic suppliers.

China to account for 44% of global robotics market (including drones) by 2024 https://www.chinainternetwatch.com/30517/robotics-forecast-2020-2024/ Mon, 04 May 2020 00:00:12 +0000 https://www.chinainternetwatch.com/?p=30517

China is the largest robotics (including drones) market in the world. It is expected to account for 38% of the global total in 2020, with a total expenditure of US$47.38 billion according to IDC.

By 2024, China will account for 44% of the global market. And, it will reach US$121.12 billion.

IDC believes that in the forecast period of 2020-2024, robotics will see higher expenditure. But, the growth rate of the drones market (5-year CAGR of 54.3%) is faster than that of robotics market (5-year CAGR of 23.4%).

Nearly half of China's robotics market spending will be concentrated in discrete manufacturing (including automobile, electronics, metal processing, etc.), followed by process manufacturing, medical and retail industries between 2020 and 2024.

Due to the novel coronavirus pneumonia epidemic, all sectors of growth in 2020 are expected to decline, the most affected ones are personal and consumer services, retail, resource industries, and consumers.

Internet economy overview 2019: China vs. the U.S. https://www.chinainternetwatch.com/28754/internet-economy-2019/ Thu, 11 Apr 2019 08:00:35 +0000 https://www.chinainternetwatch.com/?p=28754

China's road to digital transformation is quite different from other markets as the consumer internet is driving the development of industrial internet, according to a report co-released by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), Alibaba, and Baidu.

To a certain extent, Chinese consumers have led a highly digital daily life. 20% of households in first- and second-tier cities have turned their homes into a smart home. That was close to the average level in the U.S.  In addition, China captured 35% of smart speaker sales globally in Q2 2018, which was just 1% in Q3 2017.

The consumer internet has seen new business model innovations booming in recent years, such as the new retail coffee shop chain Luckin Coffee and unmanned stores.

On the contrary, the development of industrial internet still lags behind developed markets. For example, only 25% of manufacturers have been digitally transformed in China as of 2017, which was 46% in Germany and 54% in the U.S.

China needs to c...

China is estimated to spend US$77 billion on robots (including drones) by 2022 with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 26.3%, according to the latest IDC Worldwide Semiannual Commercial Robotics Spending Guide.

By then, China will be the world’s biggest robot market, accounting for over 38% of the global spending, followed by rest of Asia/Pacific (excluding China and Japan), the United States, and Japan.

As customers have a higher demand for product quality, delivery, and personalized customization, collaborative robots (cobot) are gaining popularity.

It is adopted widely in industry, especially for short cycle, multi-specification, and small-batch productions. Besides the prerequisite requirement for safety, cobot is developing to be a more comprehensive one featured with safety, security, smartness, simplicity, and standardization.

From the dimension of robotic technologies, China’s spending on robots including industrial, commercial, and consumer robots and other robotic systems. With the great demand for industrial robots, the spending on robots from discrete manufacturing (including autos, electronics, metal processing) is expected to account for 44% of the overall Chinese market.

Chinese consumers aged between 15 and 49 years have a stronger passion for high tech products than those aged over 50, according to a report from Gfk.

For 28% of consumers who aged between 15 and 19 years, having the latest household electronics is of equal importance as luxury cars or a second car. That greatly promotes the huge development of high tech products like Smart Speakers, Intelligent Service Robot, UAV, and Sweeper Robot, etc.

The retail sales of consumer-level robots are expected to exceed 10 billion yuan (US$1.56 bn) in 2018. Sweeper Robot market saw a 23% year-on-year growth in sales to 4.4 billion yuan in 2017.

Intelligent connection and navigation are two major functions of Sweeper Robot.

Smart Speaker market is gradually gaining popularity in China, which is expected to see a record-breaking growth of 256% in sales in 2018.
